You need a shoe wardrobe to keep walking in all weather and to go from track to streets to paths to trails. Here are my picks of New Balance shoes for the walker who likes a variety of walking routes and who isn't afraid of the woods or rain. These shoes are built for walkers with a neutral gait who do not overpronate.

1. New Balance 825 Lightweight Trainer/Cushioned Shoes - Women's

The 825 is the successor to my favorite 830 line. Like their predecessors, they are great for those with a neutral gait who don't need motion control. It is my favorite walking shoe for 10K through marathon distances. They are lightweight, yet cushioned enough for distance. They are very flexible and come in widths.

2. New Balance 809 Trail Shoes

A great trail shoe for walkers and runners. Flexible, stable, and rugged enough for the trail. I've worn this shoe and its predecessors on many, many walks from 10K to 20K. It is very flexible in the forefoot, yet provides excellent stability. The rugged sole prevents rocks and roots from poking through. The gusseted tongue keeps out gravel, seeds, and other trail debris.

New Balance 907 Trail Shoes

For trail walking, this shoe provides stability and protection against rocks and roots with an all-terrain tread and durable outsole. It is built to last. For stability, it uses a stability web and transitional support system. Yet the sole is flexible in the forefoot so you aren't fighting a clunky shoe with each step. The big toe box is great for walkers who need more toe room or who have a bunion. I normally wear wide, but could wear the standard width with this model.

New Balance 872 Trail Runner

The New Balance 872 OR trail running shoe is a very lightweight shoe - it weighs the same as my lightweight cushioned trainers. The sole is rugged enough to provide sole protection and traction, and wraps up over the toe for further protection from stubbing. The mesh construction makes the shoe breathe well.
